Set up self-assignable roles

Let members add or remove suitable roles themselves from an organized role message, without staff assistance.

Premium feature

Self-assignable roles use the server's Premium bot.

Before you start

  • Create the roles you want members to select in Discord.
  • Place the Wicks bot role above every role it will manage.
  • Grant the bot Manage Roles, and make sure it can view the publishing channel, send messages, and embed links.
  • Create and save a message in the Embed Builder; each saved embed can be linked to only one role panel.
PathDashboard → Your server → Self-Assignable Roles

Create a role message

  1. Enable Self-Assignable Roles.
  2. Click Add Role Message and choose an interaction type.
  3. Enter a panel name to identify this configuration in the dashboard.
  4. Select a saved embed and a publishing channel.
  5. Add role options, then link each option to one or more roles.
  6. Save your changes, then click Publish Message.

Choose an interaction type

TypeWhen to use itAvailable settings
ButtonsA small set of clear choices.Text, an optional emoji, and a color for each button; up to 25 options.
Select menuMany choices in a compact space.Text, a description, an optional emoji, and menu placeholder text; up to 20 options.
ReactionsA familiar emoji-based experience.A unique, required emoji for every option; up to 25 options.

Configure role behavior

  • Toggle roles: Wicks adds a role the member does not have and removes one they already have. With reactions, adding a reaction gives the role and removing it takes the role away.
  • Give roles: Adds the role only; choosing it again does not remove it.
  • Take roles: Removes the role only.
  • Role limit per member: Controls how many roles from this message a member can hold at once, from 1 to 25.

One option can link to multiple roles, up to 10. The role limit counts all roles linked to the message, not the number of options a member selects.

Customize member notifications

For buttons and select menus, Wicks can send a private response visible only to the member. Customize the added, removed, and unchanged messages, and place {0} where the role mention should appear.

Example: Added {0} to your roles.

You can make these responses silent. Reactions are always silent, but members using buttons or a select menu still receive a message if they exceed the role limit.

Update or delete a message

  • After changing the configuration, save it and click Update Message to apply the changes to the published Discord message.
  • Disabling the module keeps its settings but stops Wicks from processing interactions.
  • Deleting a role panel from the dashboard does not delete its old Discord message; remove that message manually from the channel if you no longer need it.
Test the result

Use a regular member account to select a role, then confirm that Wicks adds or removes it and respects the configured limit. Test every option before sharing the message with members.

Role not assigned?
  • Place the Wicks bot role above the selected role.
  • Make sure the role is not managed by another bot or integration.
  • Enable the module and save changes before publishing.
  • Check the bot's permissions in the publishing channel.
  • Update the message after changing its options or roles.
